What Is Allantoin, And How Does It Benefit Skin?
Allantoin is a non-irritating, medical-grade ingredient (protein) that soothes and protects skin through increasing the water content of skin's extracellular matrix, whilst also promoting proliferation of new skin cells and repairing the surface of skin.
It is also called 5-ureidohydantoin or glyoxyldiureide. It is a diureide of glyoxylic acid. It is a major metabolic intermediate in most organisms.
In its organic form, allantoin is found in several plants, such as sugar beet, comfrey, chamomile, tobacco seed, and wheat sprouts.
It effectively softens and helps protect the skin, making it suitable for sensitive skin as it aids in sloughing away dead skin cells. It is a keratolytic agent, meaning it can soften and separate out the cornified (tough) layer of skin to treat or prevent dry, rough, scaly, itchy skin and minor skin irritations (e.g., diaper rash, skin burns from radiation therapy).
Some people confuse Allantoin with aluminum - it is not aluminum!
At Sokörpe Laboratories we consider Allantoin a superstar ingredient which is naturally derived from the comfrey root (Symphytum officinale).
In traditional medicine, comfrey acts as an anti-inflammatory to promote healing of bruises, sprains, and open wounds when applied topically.
It is FDA approved for use at 0.5% to 2.0% in formulations.
