When should you start a skincare routine?

We get this question a lot. Think about it for a second, though, and the answer will come to you!

When we were babies, what did most parents do for us?

Exactly, they applied oils, creams, lotions, and ointments to keep our baby skin protected – basically since birth we were pampered with skincare products (most of which, unfortunately, were also loaded with toxic chemicals, but that’s for another post to dive into!).

So, to answer above question, we recommended that ideally you expand your skin care routine around age 12 with just the basics, using a gentle cleanser such as Sokörpe’s Amande Plus™ - Mandelic Acid Serum, followed by Amory – Niacinamide Serum, with N-Acetyl Glucosamine, Zinc PCA And Allantoin, followed by Sokörpe’ Vitamin C Intense Facial Moisturizer Influxx™. That’s about all you need to curate healthy skin.

If outdoors a lot, especially during the summer months you must wear protective clothing and or apply sun protection. We believe in reasonable sun exposure to maintain a healthy immune system - but sunburns should always be avoided.

Regarding cleansing, if you wear makeup, yes, you want to wash that off before bedtime with a gentle, fragrance-free, and dye-free cleanser, such as Sokörpe’s HydroKleanse™ Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) Facial Cleanser Cream. Teenagers, especially, irritate and exacerbate acne, with cleansers that are often too harsh and can result in excessive drying of the skin, which leads to overcompensation by the oil glands and ultimately to more oil on the surface of the skin – ergo more acne.

Last but not least, the above question ties into ‘when do I start eating healthy’?

The answer is to continue eating as healthy as possible all the time (or at least most of the time!). Our parents made sure that we ate a healthy, well-balanced diet when we were babies, kids… all the way into adolescents and then, when puberty kicks in we all of a sudden succumb to junk food, which is really bad timing.

Healthy skin and a healthy diet go hand in hand. You cannot consume junk food and drink sugary or diet sodas and expect that the serums and creams you apply to your skin will balance out your otherwise unhealthy lifestyle choices.

We are all tempted by burgers, fries and pizza, but keep consumption of those at bay and keep in mind that they will cause skin inflammation no matter your age.
